The Ones Called Devils

The Ones Called Devils : Peekaboo
Those are devils.
Bodies swollen with greed.
The heavier they grew,
the poorer their wings became,
and bloated flesh
swelled until even flight
was no longer possible.
Unable to fly,
they tempt us
with spoils dragged up from hell.
Soaked in greed,
clustering together,
they threaten the world.
Cut them off
before they spread again.
Kill the little devils.
Their greed
drains away our food.
Take their wealth.
There is no mercy
for devils.
Antarctic skuas
chirp and cry
as they watch penguins
flying through the deep sea.
South Polar Skua
Foraging: Primarily engages in kleptoparasitism (stealing prey from other birds) or preys upon penguin eggs and chicks.
Flight: Utilizes powerful wings for hovering and high-speed maneuvering to track and seize targets on the ground.
Penguin
Anatomy: Possesses a thick layer of subcutaneous fat to maintain body temperature in extreme cold and to store energy for hunting.
Underwater Locomotive: Wings have evolved into flippers to generate propulsion underwater. Species such as the Emperor Penguin can dive to depths exceeding 500 meters; fluid dynamically, their underwater movement is categorized as “flight.”
From the sky,
a penguin’s body
may seem excessively swollen.
But in Antarctica,
that weight
is a mechanism for survival
against the cold.
Their wings were not lost.
They simply chose
to fly through the sea
instead of the sky.
The fish and krill
brought up from the deep
may appear as plunder
to someone watching.
The world often looks different
depending on where one stands.
[Final Remarks: Peekaboo!]
Peekaboo!
While reading the first half of this poem,
who was the “devil” in your mind?
Whose voice did you hear
speaking with such certainty?
And now, perhaps, another question:
Was there ever a devil here at all?
If the poem felt clear at first
and uncertain later,
it may simply mean
that the frame has shifted.
Some readers enjoy staying with that moment.
